The ability to communicate in more than one language is an incredibly valuable skill. However, beyond simply studying a language, immersing oneself in academic subjects through another language fosters abilities that transcend traditional language learning. The Cambridge International Pathway exemplifies this approach, helping students build life skills and develop a global perspective.

This blog will explore the value of studying in another language, the abilities students gain through the Cambridge Pathway, and why this programme is so impactful.

What is the Cambridge International Pathway?

The Cambridge International Pathway is a globally recognized educational programme designed by academic experts to support students with a structured, high-quality curriculum. Its aim is to develop confident, responsible, and engaged learners through an inquiry-based approach that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills.

“Back in 2014 our school made the strategic decision to adopt the Cambridge International Pathway to provide our students with more than just English language proficiency. The impact of this internationally recognized programme combined with our national curriculum on our students is profound. While they gain strong academic foundations, they develop bilingual competencies and enhance their adaptability in international settings, ultimately preparing them for higher education and eventually global career opportunities.” – Leonardo Amulfi, Principal.

Importance of Learning in Another Language

For non-native English speakers, the Cambridge International Pathway offers significant advantages, as it emphasizes English as the medium of instruction, gradually building linguistic proficiency while strengthening subject knowledge.

Students are assessed starting in Year 4 (Grade 3) in primary school and in Years 7 and 8 (Grades 6 and 7) in middle school through Progression Tests, which are evaluated by teachers to monitor progress and inform decisions on how to best adapt teaching methods to enhance learning. In the last year of primary and middle school, students sit the Cambridge International Checkpoint exam in English and Science to evaluate their knowledge of the subjects and their language proficiency. These exams are evaluated directly by Cambridge International to ensure objectivity and serve as international benchmarks.

Programmes like the International Cambridge Pathway immerse students in academic content delivered in a second language. This distinct approach fosters practical application and integration of the language, allowing students to excel academically while developing transferable life skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking, independent research, collaboration, communication and presenting arguments.

The Cambridge Pathway is flexible and can be tailored to fit the needs of individual schools and students. It offers a wide range of subjects, (including over 70 Cambridge IGCSEs and more than 50 Cambridge International A Levels). This flexibility allows students to choose subjects they are passionate about and want to specialize in, providing a strong foundation for successful futures.

At our school, we have selected English, Science, Art, Music, and Technology as subjets taught according to the Cambridge International Pathway. These subjects are taught throughout primary and middle school to ensure students develop terminology and competencies in these areas, further enhancing their bilingual abilities and academic foundations.

“Over the years, our students have consistently outperformed the international average, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach and teaching methodology.”Joe Dawson, FBS Teacher and Cambridge Exam Officer

Conclusion

Language certifications provide valuable proof of language ability, but programmes like the International Cambridge Pathway offer much more. Language proficiency is a given in order to take the exams, which require higher levels of language skills such as comprehension and critical analysis.

For those seeking a well-rounded education, the Cambridge International Pathway stands out as a transformative choice that equips students with key life skills to succeed in a complex, interconnected world.
